The everyday convenience of disposable bottles are quickly becoming outweighed by their negative impact on the environment.

The Facts
  • Australia's annual use of disposable bottles generates more than 60,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions - the same amount that 13,000 cars generate over the course of a year (Daily Telegraph 22nd November 2007)
  • At least 6 out of 10 PET plastic bottles used in Australia are not recycled (Australian Beverage Council)
  • About 200 millilitres of oil is used to produce a one litre disposable bottle, including transport and refrigeration (Dept of Environment and Climate Change) Clean Up Australia estimates the average price of bottled water is $2.53 a litre, against about a cent a litre for tap water (SMH 22nd March 2008)
